Tipping the velvet / Sarah Waters
London : Virago Press, 1999
472 p.
Tipping the velvet is the book that spawned the television series of the same name which was produced by the BBC and screened on ABC tv earlier this year.

Set in England, mostly London during the late 1890s. The novel tells the story of Nancy Astly, an oyster girl who was born in Whitstable. In short it’s a tale about discovery, desire, and betrayal. The interest lies in the subjects covered by the story - the theatre, same sex relationships and cross dressing - all rather risque for the 1890s.
Watching the BBC series (only 3 episodes unfortunately) prompted me to read the book. Sarah Waters writes well and her characters are believable. However, choose one or the other. Watching the series first is probably not the best way of doing it, even though the characters were cast well. Knowing what was coming lessened some of my emotional responses to certain scenes, and made for a less intense read.
All in all, a great story and I’m looking forward to reading some more of Sarah Waters books when I’ve finished studying for the year.

On the 6th of September I put my new bed on laybuy (see August postings). I did a lot of umming and ahhing over the size, double vs queen, and vice versa. I ended up choosing the double - the idea behind this being that I wouldn’t have to invest in a new quilt and sheets….
This Saturday just been (11th October) I changed my mind and called the store up to see if I could swap… I can - hoorah!
So this is what I *now* have on laybuy (without the canopy!) - A Queen sized bed in the Oliver range (classic range in black or antique brown metal finish). I’ve stuck with the antique metal brown finish. $449 - yeouch. But look how big it is!

Went out with j-boy to see a couple of bands at enigma bar. andromeda, evermore and the panics. I thought that andromeda were good, I’d see them again. The lead singers voice reminded me a little of Katie Noonan’s (from George/Elixir).
Evermore, if i had the option of seeing them again, I’d leave it. I found them way too whiney and uninspiring. The panics were pretty good, but unfortunately their mixing was a little off. It improved towards the end of the set with a couple of good songs.
