Librarian stereotypes

Just this week I’ve met two new people (both male) - friends of friends. Both of them have hit me with that “wow you’re a librarian, I’ve always had a thing for librarians, that whole let your hair down from a bun and take your glasses off thing that librarians can do…”

Does anyone else ever hear this?

Also, how many more times can you deal with those jokes at parties from inebriated people about “have you been having a fun time tonight giving all the books here a dewey decimal number” and other such inane gags?

My standard replies are things like “yes, in fact, I’m wearing contact lenses right now, you got me on that. Do you want me to put my hair in a bun for you and grab my cardigan out of the car…” etc

Every time it happens, just be glad you’re not a lawyer, or a used car salesperson, or a flight attendant, or, heaven help you, a full time mum. These people get an even harder rap than we do - frankly I don’t mind being thought of as super intelligent with a really sexy alter ego. There are worse ways to be thought of!

At least people actually understand what you do. The amount of times I’ve heard, “Oh you’re a copywriter? You must have really neat handwriting!”…

Well, at least it’s a talking point. Answer someone with “I work in IT” and watch their faces fall..
