On the way to work this morning….

Can you see it?

Thank you Cancer Council

Yesterday in the post I received a full Ride for a Reason cycling kit that I’d won from the Cancer Council due to our team’s fundraising efforts. So comfortable. I wore it to work today and this afternoon I’m going to go for a ride to the beach wearing it because it’s so comfortable.

Thanks Cancer Council!

You’re a cyclist on your way to work, cruising down Pirie Street at around 35 km/hr on your road bike and then in front of you in the bike lane there’s a Coca-Cola delivery truck with it’s deliveries stacked up next to the truck. What do you do? It’s 8:45 am and there’s plenty of cars around. This happens regularly.

This photo is from google maps street view, but I think it’s time to start taking my own photos.

Does the delivery truck have rights to use the bike lane for this purpose?

Can the Adelaide City Council help?

Connecting Adelaide

I’m a commuter cyclist and a recreational cyclist. As a recreational cyclist I like to ride early in the morning when there are less cars or out into the Adelaide Hills/along the coast on the weekends.

As a commuter cyclist and someone who likes to help motivate other people to cycle I tend to be a bit of an advocate for safer roads and better cycle pathways.

Recently I was in Sydney and stumbled across a really great cycle pathway. It was separated from the road, it was dedicated and it was two way. There were also sections where you could exit and enter the cycleway.

My vision for the future of cycling in metropolitan Adelaide is to see a representative from each metropolitan council being a member of a planning organisation. This organisation would exist to perform the following tasks:

  • ensuring that cycle pathways are connected between council areas, so that the transition is seamless
  • standardised sign-age across councils
  • the establishment of some well lit high-speed cycling highways that are car free, with a fast surface and no pedestrians
  • community consultation for cycle route planning
My commute from the city to home takes me through Adelaide City Council, Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council, Burnside Council and Campbelltown Council, all in a 10 km commute. The route that I take home is roughly like this:
I’d like to see these councils talking to each other and having a better understanding of how people travel between council areas. I’d like to see better communication and positive change. I’d like to see more people cycling more often.

Significant trees

I’m a new resident in the Hartley electorate (as of the 20th of October) and I live in Magill.

My landlord has had a development application approved (last year) to have a significant tree removed. When I applied to the real estate agent to rent this house there was no mention of the fact that the tree would be cut down.

This tree is a magnificent multi branch weeping fig with a circumference of over 4 metres. I cannot believe that the Campbelltown Council has approved the removal of this tree and I can’t believe that the real estate agent did not mention this at the time of application. I have received notice this morning that the landlord wishes to have the tree cut down this coming Saturday. According to Consumer and Business Services landlords have an obligation to ensure that the tenant is given reasonable peace, comfort and privacy whilst living in the property. I believe that the removal of this tree will mean that there is not reasonable comfort or privacy as the tree is on the north face and street side of the property and provides important shade.

Why is there nothing that I can do about this?

ABC 891 spokes-people

Photo 26-10-11 8 08 56I’m excited to announce that I’ve been selected to be part of the 891 Adelaide 2011/2012 spokes people cycling team! I had to complete an entry form to participate in this amazing experience. I’ll be joining ABC staff Spence Denny, Peter Walsh, Annabelle Homer and Angus Kingston and South Australian cycling great Patrick Jonker on the 891 cycling team.

I’ll be taking part in training rides plus organised cycling events Amy’s Ride (100 km), Ride Like Crazy (107.05 km) and the Tour Down Under Challenge Tour (138 km). Just in these three events I’ll be cycling a total of around 345 km. I’m also going to be participating in Bike SA’s Gear Up Girl Challenge (50 km).

As part of my sponsorship through ABC 891 Adelaide, I’m raising money for the Cancer Council.

Blogging challenge

Thanks to my Mum, Cyndy for posting this comment on my last postWhat’s the purpose?“:

This is her list of what she would like to see me writing about:

  1. Fascinating facts about anything you find fascinating
  2. Information about countries that is unusual and which might influence people to go visit
  3. Books you have read where you can see some comparison to real life or like your life or that of a friends
  4. Food you would like to try and cook
  5. Things that you would like to do and people that you would like to do them with
  6. People that you would like to meet
  7. What you want to do with the rest of your life!

I’ll start with number one and link them through to this post as I complete them.

Stay tuned.

What’s the purpose?

A blog has to have a purpose, and the purpose of this blog is to keep my online social identity as mine. But a blog still needs to have content. So what am I going to blog about? What do you want to read about? Give me a creative challenge.

Diary of a Dating Perfectionist

I’m single and I’m in my 30s. I know who I am and I know what I want. I’m motivated, I set goals and I achieve them. I believe in myself.

Social Epidemiology and Evaluation Research Group

Recently I decided that it was time to get myself back out on the dating circuit so I started something called 10datesADL, you can read a few tweets about this.

10datesADL is a social experiment that is all about me meeting new people. I want to go on dates with your friends, the friends of your friends, random people I meet who are interesting and people I connect with via dating sites. The plan is to go on 10 dates in 10 weeks. So far I’ve been on 4 dates.

If you think you might know someone who I ought to go on a date with, then get in touch. The most important thing that I’m looking for is some shared interests, values that match and some passion. Keep me on my toes. I need cultural activities in my life. I need to date someone that is fit. I need a partner who is able to keep up with me.
