Iceland

I don’t want to make Joanna too jealous, but in two and a half weeks, I’M GOING TO ICELAND! We’ll be in Reykjavik for five days and I’ve been busy reading all the guides and tips I can get my hands on. However, if there’s anyone out there who can tell me something secret, hidden or different, please leave a comment. SO EXCITED.

Oh – can’t wait to hear about your adventures. I’m going this summer. Who can resist a country in which 80% of the population believe in elves?

I religiously follow a travel tv show called Departures. When I was away in Hong Kong for my spring break holiday, I set up my VCR to tape the Departures shows that I would be missing on Sunday nights. One of the two shows that I taped was about Iceland. I watched it yesterday and it was a great episode.

I don’t know if you can get Departures on your tv cable. I have it on OLN (Outdoor Life Network) up here in Ontario, Canada, but I have heard that it’s also being shown on the National Geographic channel. Anyways, here’s a short synopsis of what the episode was about: http://www.departuresentertainment.com/episodeS02E6-10.html.

I’ve always wanted to go… I think the triple visit is a must… Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe islands. I figure if I don’t go to all three I’ll never get back. Hopefully the mood isn’t too dark right now with the economy. And did you also know they only have about 300,000 citizens total… its hard to imagine that everyone knows everyone.

Oh I hope you have fun – here are my recommendations (I’m Icelandic -American) March can sometimes get severe weather (our Nor-easters end up there) but Iceland’s winters are usually pretty mild. I recommend http://grapevine.is/ for recommendations in English- and also if you can – rent a car and drive into the country. Some of my favorite visits have been driving around in the unbelievable beauty that is the countryside (p.s there is only one main highway that circles the country so there is not that much chance of getting lost. My sister (http://goldilocksfindsmanhattan.blogspot.com/) is planning to write a food guide/recommendation post on Iceland soon if you are interested. As for in town (I’m guessing you are going to Reykjavik?) – there are a lot of art museums and the cafe culture is really wonderful – and I have heard that the blue lagoon is spectacular (I have never been). Anyways yay to you visiting! we need all the tourism that we can get right now :) . Hope you have fun!

I was there a month ago, and all I can tell you is that you MUST go to the Fish Market restaurant! It’s probably the best restaurant I’ve ever been to. We had the tasting menu, and every single one of the dishes were wonderful! Also, the interiors are really nice, and they make great cocktails.

Another nice restaurant is B5 (http://www.b5.is), where we had a very good lamb dish.

We stayed at Apartment K, which I can highly recommend to anyone who isn’t really in to the whole “staying in a small hotel room” deal. Having your own super stylish apartment in the middle of the city centre was great!

Have an awesome vacation!

My husband and I took a trip to island in 2003 I would suggest the blue lagoon- geothermal hot springs, visiting as many waterfalls as possible especially Dettifoss and Gulifoss. Renting a car and driving the ring road. Stopping off to see the Glaciers (during your drive of the ring road) and getting piss drunk in an islandic bar during their 24 hours of light. Nothing like exiting a bar when it is 3 am and light outside. Have fun, take loads of pictures!!!

maybe a bit too late..but head to Faroe Islands..then jump on a local boat (normally have to pay small amount or they will happily take you) and head to one of the small islands which have the old Viking ruins from the 14th century in them..really interesting to see. Apart from that..in Iceland head inland! see the glaciers and the volcano there (meant to erupt in next year or so) and just get out and see the country side! best place to go is to the Renvold Centre..in near the glacier..rent snowmobiles/Jeeps and head cross land..have fun!
