Jason and I got up early to film Spruce Pine waking up. We made it as far as the Classic 50s Diner where early risers pulled in off the highway for coffee, for breakfast. Word had spread that there was a film crew in town and Mike, the owner, happily stood and posed for us at the window for minutes before going back behind the counter to supervise the flipping of pancakes and eggs.

This is Paulus Berensohn, a potter, dancer, poet, artist, Smithsonian award winning educator and the reason I was in North Carolina last year.
I was invited to take photos on the set of a documentary about this incredible human and his extraordinary life.
To Spring From The Hand, directed by Neil Lawrence, will be available soon but you can see an edit of the trailer here now.
It was the best “job” I’ve ever had and I’ll write more about it soon.

This is a photograph. Of what, I don’t know. An abstraction of feeling; that tiny fraction of a second you let the light in. Maybe this is the warmth of a person in your bed. This is your seething envy. This is your parents kissing. This is the fear that paralyses you. This is that thing you said. This is that thing you did. Yeah, that thing. This is that thing. This is longing. This is desire. This is never getting what you want. This is always getting what you want. This is not wanting. This is what you want. This is not what you want. This is not what you want. This is not what you want.

David and Chloe met at a friend’s dinner party and kept going outside together because they thought the other smoked. Turns out they were both just pretending so they could get to know each other. They’ve been together eight months.

We stood in the wind for more than an hour waiting for the penguins. Turns out we were looking at the wrong part of the beach and hundreds of metres away, some tiny little specks danced out of the waves and waddled up the beach into the darkness. What a way to spend new year’s eve.

In 1878, a passenger ship called the Loch Ard ran aground on Muttonbird Island leaving only two survivors. Fifteen year old Tom Pearce was hailed a hero after he heard the cries of 17 year old Eva Carmichael and rescued her. Tom soon returned to his life at sea, only to drown a few years later in another accident.
